Performing

Having traveled and survived the halls of academe, I've experienced both the rewards and perils that women face. I've worked as a guest artist at over 25 institutions, including the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, DePaul University, California State University at Northridge, and the University of North Dakota. As a professor of writing and performance studies at the University of Texas at Austin, my teaching centers on enabling students to discover, write, and perform their personal stories. My one-woman shows have brought back to life some of America’s most influential and misunderstood female writers.

I've published two novels, The Fool's Journey and Death of a Department Chair (click on their covers for more information), written eight plays that have been produced, published stories in North Dakota Quarterly, Writer’s Forum, and Hawaii Review, and co-edited Voices Made Flesh: Performing Women's Autobiography. Recently Laura Furman and I have completed a play based on Katherine Anne Porter's life and work entitled Passenger on the Ship of Fools.
